Domestic Objects / Overview

Domestic Objects is an extensive project I made from 1993-2000. It consists of single photographs and several series. All are cibachrome prints made from 4x5 transparency film.

In the beginning I made the work in the studio and soon, I took the objects outdoors. This really energized the objects — what’s an ironing board doing at the water’s edge? If you read the text of Florence Burrill Jacobs below, you will understand why I made the 2 photographs that resulted in this triptych to her. This piece consists of Florence’s typewritten text, which I enlarged and silkscreen printed; and, a portrait I made of her from a snapshot. This historic material on Florence Burrill Jacobs came from the Maine Women Writers Collection at the University of New England.

Domestic Objects has been shown in solo or group exhibits at many venues. With solo shows at: Davis Museum at Wellesley College; three solo exhibits at the Sarah Morthland Gallery NYC., & at the Portland Museum of Art. The group shows include: Smith College Museum of Art, Marlborough Gallery NYC, Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Bates College Museum of Art, & at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art.
